The sense of place is amazing, I could recognise many of the landmarks kf was truly transported to the Derbyshire of the s. The case is eventually tied up and the perpetrator is punished. Though Alison’s body hasn’t been found, Bennett concludes that she’s dead.
But then there is book two, taking place 35 years later.

Several times I was surprised, yet I never felt it was unfair, as McDermid did a masterful job of signaling when a character might be holding back, or when a character might by lying, without disclosing too much. Refresh and vaal again. Bennett makes it his mission to find the killer, and continues to pursue the case. So what do you do at that point? And what a twist it is which of course I will not reveal here. This is the first book I have read by Val McDermid. She hasn’t come back since.

Val McDermid has a flare for writing things into you imagination, making it so real you can’t help but picture yourself in a dire situation. The plotting is strong and although it relies on some fairly major coincidences, that aspect of the novel doesn’t feel forced.
This book got rave reviews judging from the newspaper blurbs on the coverwas given five stars by a lot of goodreads readers, and was highly recommended by a friend of mine.

I found it mostly irritating on almost every level. A very cleverly-framed text, you don’t quite know where you’re at with this murder mystery. The people interviewed won’t let the police in on anything and they don’t tell them what they need to know.

Eventually, a suggestion by the community octogenarian, Ma Lomas – who looks exactly like a fairy tale hag – leads the cops to a forgotten, long-abandoned mine. Recommended to fans of the genre.
