For one, Orient is a much more sympathetic main character than Ron, who is annoying for most of the book. In this story, an impulsive human boy wil Ron comes to Bordertown looking for his older brother, and ends up falling in with a crowd of elves, halfies, and other humans trying to bust the stereotype that the races can’t mingle. The whole “Bordertown” series was great fodder for my imagination.

Ellsewhere a world full of elves, magic, werewolves, and bikers gangs, Ron struggles to find himself. I kept forgetting which character was which, and the ending felt extremely rushed. It was kind of ironic that he found peace within when his last manifestation would have seemed the most unfortunate. No current Talk conversations about this book. In any other setting I would find this plot structure to be quite contrived, but considering how complicated Bordertown is in terms of its population groups, settings, and politics, I absolutely woll it – especially from a character like Ron who has a tendency to run off at the mouth and talk himself into trouble.
But I like this despite that. I’ve read it before too, but heck if I can remember what it was about.

What follows is a story not dissimilar to most modern stories about elsswhere, with real life themes being overwritten by the introduction of Elves, magic and the oddly named characters fantasy writers can’t get enough of. While a little dated in parts, the shstterly itself was interesting enough to push past moments of cringe worthy ’90s speak.
This one, I think, lies somewhere in between. Ron’s need to understand his brother’s suicide and to regain a sense of self drives him through a series of muddled choices that he makes, and rlsewhere tries to unmake. Can’t stomach that dreck. Either way, I did enjoy Shetterly’s writing style, which struck me as a more realistic portrayal of teenagers than I’ve seen in a while. Add to Your books. It has a male protagonist.

I’ve mentioned that YA novels are bugging me, I think it is a middle age thing, not wanting to have my face rubbed in the reminder of my glorious youth that can never be as glorious as these stories. Generally speaking of the state of books today, I can’t wait for the dystopia craze to die shettedly and perhaps we can return to something a little more interesting and different in YA.
