Eighteen of Euripides’ plays have survived complete. The chorusconsisting of young married women of Troezen, enters euriipid describes how Theseus’s wife, Phaedra has not eaten or slept in three days. The messenger protests Hippolytus’ innocence, but Theseus refuses to believe him. In another version, after Phaedra told Theseus that Hippolytus had raped her, Theseus killed his son, and Phaedra then committed suicide out of guilt, for she had not intended Hippolytus to die.
